Our Maternity Advocacy Partners
Homebirth Australia partners with other maternity consumer organisations to further our aims for increased access to homebirth.
Homebirth NSW have been leading the way in homebirth advocacy for many years, and we work closely with them on NSW and National homebirth issues. Homebirth NSW publishes the very popular Birthings magazine which has been in publication for over 40 years. They also maintain a register of homebirth midwives in NSW.
Homebirth QLD maintain a comprehensive list of midwives and other birth workers in QLD and are working on an amazing documentary on homebirth (which we can't wait to see!). They also stock a good range of homebirth merchandise in their online shop. HBQ celebrate their 40th anniversary next year.
Homebirth Victoria formed in 2023 and is a community-driven group that serves as a valuable resource for those interested in homebirth, planning a homebirth, or seeking connections with fellow homebirthing families. Additionally, the network plays a crucial role as a consumer group in advocating for homebirth access.
Maternity Choices Australia have been doing amazing work supporting women through the process of making complaints about their maternity care in hospital. They have also been advocating alongside Homebirth Australia for the expansion of publicly funded homebirth programs around Australia and they have helpful advice for women in QLD to request funding for their homebirth from their local MP (QLD is currently the only state to have never had a publicly funded homebirth model). MCA also has a fabulous resource for women planning unassisted birth (freebirth).
Better Births Illawarra are a passionate volunteer community organisation dedicated to ensuring access to empowered births, free from birth trauma, for every woman, birthing parent, and baby. Their focus starts in the Illawarra Shoalhaven and extends across NSW to influence legislative, policy and practice change. They have worked for 8 years to demand that every mother and birthing parent, regardless of risk profile, to have access to a known midwife to provide continuous care throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Hygieia Health are dedicated to the sacred work of birth and the impact it has on the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of women, their families, and birth workers. They believe that “Peace on Earth begins at Birth,” as Jeanine Parvarti Baker so poignantly stated. As a non-profit organization with a charitable purpose of promoting the prevention and treatment of birth trauma, Hygieia Health strive to provide birth workers, obstetricians, midwives, and doulas with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for themselves and others, and to return birth to its rightful place as a profound rite of passage.
