Queensland Rally for Midwifery Funding
Monday 21st August 2023
Today hundreds of midwives, women, babies, birth workers, students midwives & other allies gathered on the steps of parliament house to deliver the message that Queensland needs midwifery funding now!
Queensland is currently facing a maternity care crisis.
The Queensland Government recently announced a $42 million funding package for maternity care. So far not one cent of that has been committed to Midwifery funding.
Those at the rally delivered the message that Mothers, Babies & Midwives deserve better & demanded the following issues be addressed;
*QLD is the only state on mainland Australia not to have Publicly Funded Homebirth
*MGP Funding
*No plan to address midwife shortages
*Midwives caring for up to 20 mothers & babies in a shift
The message delivered was clear, you can’t fix maternity without Midwives.
The QNMU, ACM, My Midwives & midwives will meet with Health Minister Shannon Fentiman on Wednesday to further discuss the issue.
