State Government commits $16 million to Midwifery following rally
Health Minister Shannon Fentiman today announced $16 million to fund regional, rural and remote Midwifery Group Practices (MGPs) and a Queensland Chief Midwife.
The funding is part of the $42 million allocated to maternity services in the June state budget.
The announcement comes on the back of Monday’s rally organised by the Queensland Nurses & Midwives Union (QNMU) & the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) & attended by midwives, women, stakeholder groups & the wider community.
Disappointingly no commitment has yet been made to publicly funded homebirth or midwife ratios to safeguard inpatient care.
QNMU Secretary Kate Veach said she looks forward to further discussions with the Health Minister on these commitments.
